Football stories

The Friends have been approached by John Porter who is very interested in the sporting history of West London. He is currently looking into the the history of Gunnersbury Park as a sporting venue. He would be grateful for the help of individual Friends and other readers of this web-site. We will pass on any stories you send to John, and of course, they may find their way onto our Scrapbook pages or into the new interpretation scheme which will tell the history of the Park as well!

John plans to write a piece for the Sporting Memories Network, a charity that uses memories of sporting events and sportspeople to improve the lives of people with memory issues such as Alzheimer’s. The Network encourages sports history writing that can make a real difference to people’s lives, with articles used in reminiscence groups and workshops. John is based in Greenford and has already contributed a piece to the Network on the AEC factory football team at Southall. He wants to explore the idea that Gunnersbury Park, with its large number of football pitches, was a real hub for local football, in many ways a West London parallel with Hackney Marshes!
