The memorial was opened today by Prince William. Philippa Dolphin, a Friends committee member, writes: “I stumbled across the event. There were several moving speeches watched by a number of seated invitees plus a few dogs and their owners, people with buggies, and me behind barriers some distance away.
The sculpture is by Michael Landy, one of the YBAs, and responsible for Break Down an artwork which involved shredding all his possessions over a 14 day period. His Gunnersbury artwork is in stark contrast. A lady with a dog next to me muttered that it looked as if it had been done by kids at Lionel Rd School. She added that it didn’t seem an appropriate memorial and would soon be covered in graffiti. Let’s hope not.”
