Archaeology and Gunnersbury 1

During the week beginning 21 May archaeology students from Birkbeck College are at Gunnersbury for 4 days learning how to do geophysical archaeology surveys. The are learning how to use a range of sensors to map archaeology sites, initially without excavation. If you watch Time Team you will know all about the remarkable equipment which can read variations in the ground beneath our feet and which have revolutionised archaeology. The students have been asked to scan the north lawns to see if they can find any trace of the 17th century mansion and also to work in the east walled garden where there should be plenty of buried foundations for them to interpret – they need to learn how to tell the difference between modern and old buried structures. They will write a report on anything they discover. you will find A4 posters around the park explaining the work.
